If you are looking for another reason to love living in Atlanta, here is one worth celebrating. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recently released its 2026 American Fitness Index, an annual study that evaluates the 100 largest cities in the United States based on how well they support healthy, active lifestyles. This year’s report placed Atlanta at Number 8 nationwide, making it one of the ten healthiest large cities in America.

For anyone considering a move to Atlanta, or for those who already call the city home, this recognition reflects much more than fitness. It speaks to the quality of life our region offers every day.

What Is the American Fitness Index?

The ACSM American Fitness Index has been published for 19 years and measures far more than gym memberships or exercise habits. It combines data on personal health behaviors, chronic disease rates, parks, trails, transportation infrastructure, environmental quality, and community investment to determine how well cities support healthy living.

The report recognizes cities that make it easier for residents to incorporate movement into their daily lives through thoughtful planning and public investment.

The Top 10 Cities in America

The 2026 rankings are:

  1. Arlington, Virginia
  2. Washington, D.C.
  3. Minneapolis, Minnesota
  4. Seattle, Washington
  5. Denver, Colorado
  6. San Francisco, California
  7. Irvine, California
  8. Atlanta, Georgia
  9. Madison, Wisconsin
  10. Boston, Massachusetts

Atlanta’s place in the top ten is especially impressive given the size and diversity of our metropolitan area.

Why Atlanta Ranked So Highly

Atlanta performed well across both personal health measures and community resources. According to the report, the cities ranking highest consistently provide:

  • Extensive parks and recreation opportunities.
  • Walkable neighborhoods.
  • Safe biking infrastructure.
  • Public transportation options.
  • Investments in public health.
  • Policies that encourage active living.

These are qualities many Atlanta residents experience every day through destinations like the Atlanta BeltLine, Piedmont Park, Freedom Park Trail, Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, PATH trails, neighborhood parks, and an expanding network of sidewalks and cycling routes.

Communities such as Morningside, Virginia Highland, Decatur, Brookhaven, Midtown, Buckhead, and East Atlanta continue to attract buyers who value walkability and access to outdoor recreation.

Healthy Communities Benefit Homeowners

As real estate professionals, we often talk about location. Rankings like this help explain why certain locations remain desirable year after year. Communities with strong parks, connected transportation, and healthy outdoor spaces often enjoy:

  • Greater neighborhood appeal.
  • Stronger long term buyer demand.
  • Improved quality of life.
  • More opportunities for recreation.
  • Better community engagement.

Today’s buyers increasingly look beyond the home itself. They want neighborhoods where they can walk to restaurants, ride bikes, enjoy green space, and maintain an active lifestyle.

The Report Highlights Areas for Improvement

The report also reminds us that every city has work to do. One of the biggest national concerns identified was rising food insecurity. Ninety nine of the 100 cities experienced increases compared with last year, highlighting ongoing economic pressures and access to healthy food.

This year’s report also examined the relationship between asthma, physical activity, and air quality. Researchers noted that cleaner air, safe recreation spaces, and active transportation all play important roles in improving community health.

These findings reinforce that healthy cities require ongoing investment and thoughtful planning.

Atlanta Continues to Shine

Atlanta’s Top 10 ranking confirms what many residents already know. This is a city where opportunity, recreation, culture, and community continue to come together. Whether you enjoy walking the BeltLine, hiking nearby trails, exploring neighborhood parks, or simply living in a community designed for an active lifestyle, Atlanta continues to distinguish itself as one of America’s best places to live.

For buyers considering a move, and homeowners wondering about the long term appeal of our market, this national recognition is another positive indicator of Atlanta’s enduring strength and quality of life.
